Boost your overall health with gratitude

Having gone through hard times and being deprived of what we would call “normal things” helped me get things in perspective. It has led me to reflect about all the things I DID have and how we should always be grateful for the blessings we have. However, in our busy and somewhat comfortable life, we tend to forget about some simple things from our everyday life that yield countless blessings.

Being grateful has also been proven to have numerous health benefits. Some studies have shown that grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and they report feeling healthier than other people. Another research also confirmed that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression (Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D.). Furthermore, being grateful could help sleep better and improve self-esteem by reducing social comparison (which we are highly inclined to do due to the increased use of social media). “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever among you wakes up physically healthy, feeling safe and secure within himself, with food for the day, it is as if he acquired the whole world.’”

So let’s reflect on what small yet amazing blessings we encounter in our day to day life and be grateful for them everyday!

Being grateful has to become a daily habit and here are some tips to help you establish it.

Make a list

List all the things you are grateful for and keep on adding to this list everyday. It can be small things as well as very essential things like family and health.

Make Dua

Ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to continue blessings you with all that you have (think about what’s on your list or even read i). Do it after each Salat so ie becomes a habit.

Create a vision board

Make a collage or something similar about the people and things you’re grateful for. This could include family and friends, proud accomplishments, and positive quotes. It’s a great visual reminder of good things in your life. Place it somewhere you can look at it everyday.

Keep a gratitude journal

Write down things that happened during the day and reflect on them to acknowledge the lessons you can be grateful for.

Express your gratitude

Make sure to let know people around you that you are grateful for things they do or for just being around. Do it EVERYDAY!
